Online auctions won't be limited to obscure collectibles, with two announcements this week seeing airfares, holiday packages and hotel rooms up for the bidding.
Yahoo! Australia & NZ Auctions this week said the Rydges Hotel Group would be using its service to auction off room nights in Rydges properties in Australia and New Zealand. The auctions will run in a specially created area under the category of "Other Goods & Services - Hotels & Resorts".
"It's a flexible and scalable strategy that will allow us to attract and win over new guests," said the managing director of Rydges Hotels,David Seargeant. "We're hoping to appeal to opportunistic bookers who wouldn't necessarily be thinking of staying in one of our hotels or booking through a travel agent."
Online travel agency Travel.com.au announced yesterday that it would begin weekly auctions of domestic and international airfares and holidays from Monday, July 5.
No reserve prices will be set for the auctions and bids can be made in $1 increments, according to Travel.com.au. Bidders will need to supply their e-mail address and the auctions will begin at 6pm each Monday night and close the following Friday at 3pm.
