Cashback deal sparks encyclopaedia battle

Starting next Tuesday Harvey Norman will be hosting the battle of the CD-ROM encyclopaedias -- both IBM and Microsoft will be offering cashback deals for World Book and Encarta, through the national retailer.

According to Harvey Norman, IBM first came up with a cashback promotion that essentially gives its World Book encylcopaedia away for free -- customers outlay $44.95 and claim the same amount back.

Microsoft followed the lead and will also offer a special deal on Encarta through Harvey Norman. For $49.95, consumers will receive Encarta, a cashback offer of the same amount and a $100 discount on the new version of the CD-ROM which is expected to be released later this year.
