Google's Sydney office is set to kick-start a 27 hour-long global Google Developer Day on May 31, where developers will get a chance to participate in workshops, keynotes and breakout discussions on Google's APIs (application programming interfaces).

The event will be hosted at Google offices in ten countries, including its Mountain View headquarters in California, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow, London, Madrid, Paris, and Hamburg. The first event will begin on May 31 in Sydney at 9am local time and the last will finish in Mountain View at 7pm.

"We're very excited to hold this first-ever worldwide Google developer gathering," said Google vice president of search products and user experience, Marissa Mayer.

"Google Developer Day is an opportunity for them [developers] to connect with one another, learn the latest techniques and have their questions answered by Google's developer product teams. It's also a chance for us to get feedback from the community and find ways to make our developer offerings even better."

Topics to be covered will include developing location-based services with Google Maps, Google Earth, and SketchUp; creating mash-ups with AJAX (asynchronous JavaScript and Extensible Markup Language) and Google Gadgets; and developing with the Google Web Toolkit.

"The event will be best suited to web developers and people with a technical understanding for how to utilise Google's suite of products on their own sites to improve usability and content," said Google Australia head of corporate communications & public affairs, Rob Shilkin.

Various developers have been locked in for workshops and presentations. This includes: Guido Van Rossum, creator of the Python programming language including in Beijing; Chris DiBona, manager of Google's open source programs in London; Bruce Johnson and Joel Webber, the co-creators of the Google Web Toolkit at the Mountain View headquarters; and in Sydney, Lars Rasmussen, Google Maps senior engineer.

The Sydney event is will include sessions detailing Google APIs, open source software development, Google Gadgets, Geo Session, GData, maps and more. It will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney.

A Google spokesperson said it expects to accommodate 2500 worldwide attendees at the event.

Those not able to attend will be able to catch the Mountain View event via live streaming webcasts on YouTube.
