ViewSonic LiteBird PJ1075

For those with a limitless budget or a Lottery win, the ViewSonic LiteBird PJ1075 projector is a good complement to any home theatre setup or professional business environment. Its 1200 lumens project a very bright picture, which can be viewed adequately even in a moderately lit room.

The incorporation of DLP technology means the size of the unit is very small and compact (it weighs 2.3kg) and it can be wall- or ceiling-mounted. It also means that it can be transported effortlessly from job to job in its soft leather pouch. ViewSonic offers a hard case option, too. The unit features multiple inputs, including VGA, S-Video and composite connections, but a digital (DVI) interface is lacking. A neat incorporation is Picture-in-picture which, as the name suggests, allows you to view one source inside another - you can be presenting on your laptop and at the same time be showing a DVD or video in the corner of your screen.

Setting up the unit is an effortless task: just plug in your source, power it up and away you go. An infrared remote control ships with the unit and gives access to the on-screen menu system and other basic functions, such as zoom and keystone correction. The on-screen menu also allows changes to be made to colour and geometry settings, but during my testing I found the default settings to be optimal. For convenience, a speaker is built into the unit and a height adjustment in the form of a small leg is located at the front.

Other features include manual focus and zoom controls, and the unit has the capability to project at resolutions up to 1024x768 as well as 1280x1024 with extra compression. Image quality was excellent for both PC and DVD sources although, at times, white tones appeared a "little too bright. Suggested projection distances can vary from 1m to 10m and can result in an image 4.2x5.5m in size (without manually zooming).

When splurging on a product such as this, it is reasonable to expect a strong support plan, and ViewSonic doesn't disappoint: it provides a three-year warranty complete with 24x7 technical and customer support.

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
