Niche distributor, Innovision, has increased its security product line-up under a new agreement with IP-based surveillance vendor, Strategic Vista.
Carrying the US vendor's Lorex brand would help the distributor build beyond its multimedia and component specialisations, managing director, Boyd Dainton, said.
IP-based security was projected to grow 45 per cent in 2005, he said.
"We have covered a few of these products through AV Labs in the past but this is a dedicated range," Dainton said. "[Mass merchants] want a full family or category of products and Lorex has catered to that."
Despite its apparent complexity, Dainton insisted the mum and dad market was ready for IP surveillance.
"The NZ distributor for Lorex has the product in Bunnings, Dick Smith and Mitre 10," he said. "It is also talking to Kmart. Each of these products is DIY and there is no need for a contractor or third party."
Increased ease of use, the current focus on security and dramatic price drops meant IP surveillance was now attractive to the low end of the market, Dainton said.
"In the past, a dedicated system would have cost a small business up to $20,000 rather than the $1200 now for a complete bundle," he said. "Home systems are now available from $99."
