LG GSA-4167B

Replacing LG's GSA-4163B Multi DVD burner is the GSA-4167B Super Multi. Not a lot has changed besides the introduction of support for DVD-R DL at 4x and a speed boost for DVD+R DL up to 6x. Now LG supports all media formats, and while this model doesn't set any speed records, it does a capable job of any burning tasks you throw at it.

In our tests, it produced a very clean burn that was readable in all other drives we tested it with. The double-layer 7.2GB test burnt in 22 minutes at 6x on a 2.4x disc- a data rate of 5.4MBps. The automatic detection for the speeds of each disc was flawless, allowing for the max burn speeds of 6x with 2.4x media. The 4GB DVD+R burn took 6 min 46 secs, a data transfer rate of 10MBps. The transfer speed to the hard drive was a little bit slow at 11.83MBps and was reflected in the burst rate of 25MBps.

LG has bundled an easy access LG toolbar that sits on your desktop for quick burning and media player access. This is a nice feature. However, unless you burn discs on a regular basis, it is probably just adding clutter.

The LG GSA-4167B is a reliable burner with a 2MB buffer. It is well priced for the speed that it delivers and is a welcome release after six months of inactivity by LG in the DVD drive scene.
