Vonage Holdings this week said it has been served with a lawsuit from Verizon alleging infringement of certain patents relating to VoIP technology.

The suit was filed against Vonage and its subsidiary, Vonage America, by Verizon Services and Verizon Laboratories. The lawsuit identifies seven patents allegedly infringed upon by Vonage.

Vonage says it believes that its services have been developed with its own proprietary technology and technology licensed from third parties and intends to vigorously defend the lawsuit. Vonage says it has engaged its outside intellectual property counsel to investigate the matter.

Calls to Verizon were not returned by press time.
