Acer TravelMate 4064 WLMi

Acer continues to dominate in the notebook market when balancing power, performance and price. The 4064 WLMi is no exception, scoring extremely well in our tests. Running an Intel Pentium M 2GHz processor, the 4064 WLMi scored a very respectable 84 in WorldBench 5, and 5019 in 3DMark 2001SE using an Intel graphics media accelerator 900.

While its 3-D score is well below par, this is not a gaming machine, averaging a dismal frame rate of 2fps (frames per second) in FEAR with high settings at 1024x768 resolution. That isn't to say you can't game on this. We had FEAR running on its auto-detect settings at 28fps. The 4064WLMi is good for pretty much anything else, blitzing the field in battery life with Mobile Mark 2002, the 4064WLMi keeled over after a massive 287 minutes. This is 40 minutes clear of its closest rival which was another Acer, the 8105WLMi.

CrystalBrite technology is being used for Acer's great 15.4in WXGA LCD screen and their SignalUp technology for improved antennas efficiency. Connectivity is catered for by way of WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, PC Card, modem, Ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports, audio at the front and VGA out at the back.

Weighing 2.9Kgs, it is of medium weight, but is delivered with a sub-$2000 price tag. All in all, this is stable and sturdy buy with great per-dollar performance.

Verdict: A battery life that would make the Duracell bunny blush, the 4064WLMi is a good performer for office apps and multitasking.

Specifications: Intel Pentium M 760 2.0GHz 533 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache, 15.4in WXGA wide TFT LCD, Intel graphics media accelerator 900, 100GB HDD, DVD DL+/- RW, 2 x 512MB DDR2 RAM, 802.11 b/g.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.
