VoIP in a stick

GoTalk Broadband Voice has released a USB memory stick that allows talkative types to plug into any PC in the world and VoIP away.

The VoIP to Go USB memory stick provides users with VoIP access from any PC with a broadband connection and is bundled with a headset and audio control.

GoTalk CEO, Steve Picton, said the memory stick is loaded with a user's "fingerprint" that accesses customer information and operates as softphone client software. All software is run directly from the USB stick, so no PC installation is required, he said.

Picton likened the USB memory stick to a SIM card, as VoIP to Go can be connected to any PC or laptop for instant voice access.

"It means you can have a traveling office with you wherever you are in the world," he said.

Rates for calls are based on where a user has registered their Gotalk plan and not from where a call originates. For example, a customer who has a registered location in Australia will be charged Australian GoTalk rates, regardless even if their physical location is in the US or elsewhere.

"It may be a niche market, but I think it's a potentially a very large one," Picton said.

The USB memory stick also comes with 90MB of memory for a customer's storage needs.

Gotalk's VoIP to Go is priced at $49.95 and will be initially launched through Harvey Norman, followed by GoTalk's channel of retailers.

Freshtel released a similar device, the Freshtel 4030 Stick Phone, at the start of this year. It retails for $69.95.
