Internet security package: Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 11.0

PC-cillin offers a complete range of tools, taking on viruses, hackers, privacy threats and spam. First and foremost, though, it’s a full-blown antivirus program rivalling Norton and McAfee. When you’re online, the Network Virus Emergency Center can access an up-to-date database of circulating viruses, dramatically reducing the risk of infection.

You can just leave PC-cillin to run in the background and rely on its default settings or, to make the most of it, open the easy-to-use main interface. The URL Filter allows you to block access to specific Web sites, and the Firewall component is just as straightforward. You can select any number of different profiles, which are useful for different environments. Double-clicking on a profile allows you to fine-tune it by selecting a protection level and blocking or opening specific ports as you require.

PC-cillin also has a range of e-mail security tools. Mail Scan automatically checks incoming and outgoing e-mail for viruses or other malicious code, and Webmail Scan does the same for Internet mail services such as Yahoo and Hotmail. There’s a spam filter but advanced users might be frustrated by limited access to settings.

PC-cillin Internet Security 11.0 provides a good level of protection and an impressive selection of tools, but doesn’t overwhelm the user with complexity.
