Creative gives DVD an encore

PC audio and video specialist Creative Technology yesterday released its new PC-DVD Encore 6X Dxr3 kit aimed at adding high-performance DVD (digital video disk) entertainment capabilities to standard PCs.

The PC-DVD Encore 6X Dxr3 (dynamic extended resolution) features Creative's latest decoder card, the successor to the Dxr2 decoder card. Video quality has been significantly enhanced with this revision, and coupled with the PC-DVD 6X drive offers a powerful PC-DVD solution, Creative said in a statement.

The kit addresses multiple segments of the PC market with the latest DVD technology, including the entertainment enthusiast, home PC user and PC gamer, Creative said. PC-DVD Encore 6X Dxr3 delivers storage capacity of up to 17G bytes of data, enhanced full-motion, full-screen video plus Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio, the company said. Included in the PC-DVD Encore 6X Dxr3 kit is the PC-DVD 6X drive, with a maximum transfer rate of 8.1M bits per second for DVD-ROM data and 24X for CD-ROM data.

Creative said that Dxr3's architecture features six-tap filtering and scaling techniques to eliminate combing effects or artifacts that may appear around quickly moving objects, giving users sharper video and clearer imaging; Windows resolutions of up to 1,600 x 1,200 at 85Hz, a significant increase from the Dxr2's 1,280 x 1,024 resolution; and direct connections to a TV with S-Video or Composite outputs.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
