CodeGear unveils plug-ins for Eclipse tools

Aims to help developers tackle myriad Java development challenges

CodeGear Monday unveiled a set of plug-ins for open-source Eclipse development tools that the company said can be used to ease application performance, visual development and team collaboration challenges faced by Java developers.

The Borland Software unit said the new JGear plug-ins address several major pain points faced by Eclipse developers, including application performance tuning, coding and configuring Java servers and frameworks, and development team collaboration.

"Today, developers and teams deal with these problems manually," said Michael Swindell, CodeGear's vice president of products and strategy, in a statement. "Our aim with JGear is to help developers and teams using Eclipse-based IDE solutions to increase both their developer and application performance as well as their overall project success rate."

CodeGear had earlier released JGear plug-ins for its own JBuilder 2007 Eclipse-based integrated development environment. The new JGear tools can be used by Eclipse IDEs made by corporate IT developers or by other vendors, CodeGear said.

The new plug-in tools include JGear Performance for Eclipse, JGear LiveSource for Eclipse and JGear Team for Eclipse.

JGear Performance includes memory and CPU profiling and debugging features, automatic detection of potential memory leaks and real-time monitoring of virtual machine memory use.

The LiveSource tools, which support the Unified Modeling Language, can be used to simplify rapid application development projects. LiveSource can simultaneously replicate changes to models on the code to help software architects and developers better work together, CodeGear said.

Finally, JGear Team includes server and client tools that ease team collaboration.

The JGear plug-ins will be available on Aug. 20. JGear Performance and JGear LiveSource each costs US$299. JGear Team Client is US$399 and JGear Team Server is US$599.

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
