Sex and video games are not subjects that are usually associated with one another (in fact, some people would suggest that gamers have never had any!) However, this hasn't stopped publishers from including lashings of gratuitous pornography in their games over the years. Whether it be the independent jiggle physics of a female character's chest, or a dubious 'hot-coffee' injection, the subject of sex has reared its controversial head in a wide variety of genres. Over the next few pages, we'll take you through some of the highs and lows of red-light gaming (with plenty of pictorial evidence, of course). Start the slideshow if you dare...

Players controlled a pair of nude women at the bottom of the screen and attempted to catch projectiles from a suspiciously phallic-shaped canon (with their mouths, naturally). Custer’s Revenge, another ‘Swedish Erotica’ effort, followed hot on its heels. This time the object was to ravish a Native American woman bound to a wooden stake. …And gamers wonder where they get their grotty reputation from. Developed by Sierra, it was a point-and-click adventure game where the object was to relieve Larry Laffer, a 40-year old loser, of his virginity. Despite being a strictly ‘adults only’ affair, there was very little risqué content in the original title. Further installments became increasingly racier, with the most recent entry (2004’s Magna Cum Laude) being banned from sale in Australia by the OFLC. Ever since, video games have regularly relied on sexually provocative characters to reel in male gamers – from the jiggling kung-fu harlots in Dead or Alive, to the red-headed vampire totty in Blood Rayne. Here are some of the more notable standouts. The presence of naked ‘hotties’ and unlockable stripper videos cold not make up for the bland graphics and terrible bike handling. The game was universally panned by critics and sales were abysmal. For once, sex didn’t sell.BMX XXX Image 2BMX XXX Image 3BMX XXX image 4Grand Theft Auto: ‘Hot Coffee’ modTrust the Dutch – if there’s porn to be found in a video game, they’ll find it. The infamous 'hot coffee' incident occurred when a 37-year old hacker from the Netherlands discovered hidden code within Rockstar's popular action game GTA: San Andreas. The code unlocked a new mini-game in which the main character engaged in sex with his girlfriend, after being invited into her apartment for some hot coffee. This caused a storm of controversy across the globe - a situation which was only worsened when Rockstar denied all knowledge of the hidden code. All copies of the game were subsequently recalled, to be replaced with ‘caffeine free’ versions.GTA image 2GTA image 3GTA image 4Singles: Flirt up Your LifeSingles: Flirt up Your Life was a German PC game released in 2004. Unlike the majority of sex-based games, it did away with the plot altogether; instead focusing on the sole aim of getting down and dirty with your virtual roommate. The game was very similar in look and feel to The Sims, but with a much heavier emphasis on love and sex. The aim of the game was to build up the Playboy Empire from scratch - while getting lucky with as many bunnies as possible along the way. Again, it played a lot like a racier version of The Sims, with a similar mixture of social interaction and house building.
