For the first time ever in Australia and New Zealand, Acer will sell Sun Microsystems server and storage offerings to the local market.
The agreement allows Acer to expand its breadth of offerings to include Sun's Intel and AMD based energy-efficient servers.
This is the first time Acer will offer x64 servers incorporating Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processors. Under the agreement Acer and its partners will be able to sell Sun's x64 server product range, blade server technology and mid-range disk and tape storage.
The two companies will work together on joint partner and customer initiatives including training, accreditations and product promotions. For example, products can be sold via the Acer Web site.
Moreover, Acer will be able to use Sun's online tools to help configure and sell Sun technologies.
Acer Australia enterprise solutions group director, Bert Noah, said it is great news for both companies combining Acer's strength in the desktop market and Sun's number one position in the server market.
"Acer continues to experience strong growth across ANZ, and our customers now demand a more sophisticated server offering, particularly for blades," he said. Partner sales director at Sun Microsystems, Sam Srinivasan, said cultural synergies in areas such as open standards, platform choice and green computing, made the partnership an exciting prospect. "There are segments where our customers will benefit from the two companies working in partnership to deliver a more complete solution," he said.
"Acer has more than 400 resellers across ANZ and this partnership will open up these additional outlets to us." Sun will roll out a training and accreditation program for any Acer partners that isn'tt already accredited on Sun technologies in the first quarter of 2008. Acer will announce a series of product bundles in coming months. Established in 1990, Acer Computer Australia (ACA) has 492 employees. Acer now holds 15 per cent of notebook market share worldwide.
Meanwhile Acer Inc. employs 5,600 people supporting dealers and distributors in more than 100 countries.
