Desktop DNA 3.5

PC migration software

Version 3.5 of Desktop DNA can quickly and easily replicate practically any of your computer's settings. It can be used effectively to recover and replace a PC's environment as well as transfer (or migrate) system settings, application settings, applications and data files to other machines. Not only that, Desktop DNA can also play the role of a backup tool and can even be used in conjunction with Windows Task Scheduler to perform automated backups.

It supports multiple flavours of Windows, including 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000 and XP and contains a lot of features to make the task of migrating user operating environments to a new computer as fast and easy as possible. This, of course, can also translate to dollars saved by reduced downtime and IT department workload, as Desktop DNA can migrate all settings in one hit.

It features an intuitive user interface and 'wizard'-like welcome screen, yet is a powerful tool that lets administrators create customised templates. Filters can also be applied to a migration, allowing the inclusion or exclusion of files by type, size and date.

The program can create convenient self-extracting files, which embed the Desktop DNA application in them, and can be stored on CDs or network locations. These can also be password protected. Disk spanning is supported for large operations, and migrations can take place over a network.

While Desktop DNA can migrate settings from a huge list of applications, Muscle Migration is a feature that creates scripts for custom or in-house applications that may not be supported straight out of the box.

All up, Desktop DNA 3.5 is a powerful tool, with a slew of features that makes data migration and recovery operations flexible, quick and easy. The cost of the package varies according to the licence package needed.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
