OQO continues to push the boundaries in ultramobile PC design, on Wednesday launching the Model 2+ computer that delivers a full PC performance in a tiny package.

The Model 2+, weighs under 1 pound and is small enough to fit inside a pocket. Features include an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) touch screen for data input that provides vivid images and better outdoor readability, while consuming less power to preserve battery life, OQO said.

The device will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that will be held between Jan. 8 and 11.

Targeted at mobile professionals, the Model 2+ also includes 3G connectivity for quick Internet access. The Qualcomm Gobi chipset in the Model 2+ supports multiple 3G protocols including CDMA2000, EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) and HSPA (High Speed Packet Access), according to OQO. The Model 2+ also supports Wi-Fi a/b/g wireless networking.

The device has a lithium-ion battery that lasts for an estimated 3.5 hours, and a double-capacity battery is available to extend this life to 7 hours.

Based on Intel Atom Z-series processors running at clock speeds up to 1.86GHz, the Mobile 2+ supports up to 2GB RAM and can run Windows Vista OS. The device's performance is doubled that of OQO's earlier devices, the company claimed. OQO announced plans to switch to Intel's Atom from Via Technologies' C7-M processor last year.

The OQO model measures 5.6 inches wide by 3.3 inches tall by 1 inch thick (14.24 centimeters by 8.38 cm by 2.54 cm), fitting into the category of devices that Intel calls mobile Internet devices. Prices for the Model 2+ start at US$999, and the device will be available in the first half of 2009. The $999 model includes a 1.33GHz Atom Z-series processor, a 60GB hard drive, the Windows XP Home OS, and a 5-inch wide touch screen.
