Samsung Unveils Fast Graphics Memory Chip

The new chip is expected to find a market among PC makers and manufacturers of computer games machines because of its high speed, which means more realistic three-dimensional images can be created and handled, Samsung said in a statement.

The device, which is designed using 0.17-micron design rules, can process 8GB of data per second, which is equivalent to 60 frames per second of video at a resolution three times better than that of standard television.

Samsung said sales of the chip next year alone are expected to reach $US700 million thanks to the anticipated demand, and the company says it expects to keep a 40 per cent share of the world graphics memory market.
