The suite includes the Windows 2000 Server operating system with Service Pack 1, Exchange Server 2000 with Outlook 2000 for client applications, Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000, SQL Server 2000 and Front Page 2000. Microsoft says every major component of the package has been upgraded since the previous version. A major overhaul in the underlying architecture of the package has eliminated a bothersome characteristic of the last version: Changes to one component are now reflected in all others. Installation is easier as well, Microsoft says.
Small Business Server 2000 is available from PC manufacturers, retail outlets, technology providers and consultants for an estimated price of $3200 for the server and five clients. Dell Computer already has said it will ship Small Business Server 2000 on its PowerEdge servers.
Compaq is also expected to put Small Business Server 2000 on its Compaq Proliant ML server models 330, 350 and 370, Microsoft said. Gateway will offer it on its Gateway 6400 and 7400 series servers and it also is expected to be adopted by Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft said. Minimum system requirements are a Pentium II CPU, 128MB of memory, and a 4GB hard disk. Microsoft recommends 256MB of memory.
Small Business Server should be available locally in early March.
