Melbourne will become the first capital city on the east coast with permanent DAB+ digital radio services on 11 May.
MIX, GOLD, SEN, 3AW, 3MP, FOX, MAGIC, TRIPLE M, NOVA, VEGA, Sport 927, Radar, Pink Radio, Koffee and NovaNation are taking part in the switch-on, with the ABC and SBS expected to commence permanent digital radio services throughout June and July.
The Melbourne launch follows Australia's first DAB+ digital radio broadcasts in Perth, with three more capital cities to come.

DAB+ digital radios like the Yamaha TSX-130 digital radio and the Sangean DPR-99 DAB+ Radio are required to listen to digital radio; analog radios cannot receive digital signals.

all well and good to start a separate DAB broadcast, unfortunately there are two major obstacles to its uptake-firstly it is not compatible with the current austalia wide digital radio being broadcast via digital TV tuners(2 abc stations and 3sbs stations-and neither of them appear to have plans to increase the stations via that method), so everyone has to buy another device to receive it, and secondly suitable devices arent available. Whats available is a small boombox style DAB radio, with or without CD player. There appear to be no HI FI receivers or tuners to add to an existing HI FI detup (or to replace an existing tuner or receiver), there are no car radios with DAB capability(Ichecked on the UK websites-even after several years of digital boradcasts there are none there either-you need an addon to plug in to the back of your radio-if its compatibile and if there is room behind it!), there are no small sony walkman style DAB radios, and there do not appear to be any mobile phones with DAB capability! There also appear to be no DAB tuner cards for computers available either here or overseas that I could find.
