GPS manufacturer TomTom will release a dedicated app and car kit for the iPhone that turns the smartphone into a fully fledged navigation unit.
Speaking during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, TomTom co-founder Peter-Frans Pauwels demonstrated using TomTom’s navigation software with a specially designed car kit for the iPhone 3G.
Although it hasn't been confirmed, the TomTom car kit for iPhone should also work with the recently launched iPhone 3G S.
TomTom hasn't revealed an Australian launch date or pricing details. TomTom marketing manager Chris Kearney was tight lipped about the new iPhone kit, saying "unfortunately we can't provide any further details at this stage".
The TomTom for iPhone kit consists of two products: an Apple-specific version of TomTom’s turn-by-turn navigation software that will be downloadable from the App Store and the car kit for docking the iPhone while driving.
It is not yet known if the TomTom app will work without the car kit, nor how it will handle incoming phone calls during turn-by-turn navigation.
