Help us track the NBN

Documenting Australia's broadband network rollout

Australians can now track the progress of the Federal Government’s $43 billion National Broadband Network (NBN), as the fibre-to-the-premises (fttp) network is rolled out to homes and workplaces across the country.

The NBN Project will document Australia’s largest infrastructure deployment and, as a Computerworld reader, you can help contribute to the information as the network goes ahead.

Simply visit The NBN Project on the Computerworld website and zoom in on the map to see where the rollout is up to in your area. Towns and suburbs that have been suggested to connect next are marked in grey. Orange markers indicate that the tender process is already underway or planned, yellow shows where the network is under construction and the green markers indicate existing optic fibre infrastructure that is awaiting connection.

Computerworld readers can also contribute information and photos on the project by emailing editor@computerworld.com.au

Nearly 5000 homes and businesses in Tasmania will be the first to be able to access the network – which can provide speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. The first stage of the rollout is expect to deliver wholesale-only, open access broadband before the second half of 2010. The communities of Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point in Hobart’s outer suburbs will be the first to receive optical fibre connections.

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
