Father's Day Gift Guide: Improve your dad’s navigation skills with a new GPS

We round up the latest GPS units so your dad will never get lost again!

Does your dad pride himself on being a great driver? He probably thinks that he knows his way around town without a street directory. No matter whether he’s a top driver (or thinks he may be), he isn't as directionally capable as a GPS unit!

This Father’s Day, why not give your dad a new GPS unit so he will never get lost again? Aside from giving you turn-by-turn directions, GPS units are great for locating points of interest (POIs), saving your favourite locations and exploring new places, so your next road trip with the family can be even better! We've included five of our favourite GPS units, comprising both entry-level units and top-of-the-range devices.

TomTom XL 340 GPS unit (RRP: $399)

This TomTom GPS unit combines IQ Routes technology, advanced lane guidance and the EasyPort mount system with a widescreen display. The TomTom XL 340 also continues TomTom's track record of providing an excellent user interface, making this GPS a pleasure to use.

Navigon 4350max GPS unit (RRP: $399)

Navigon may lack the brand awareness that the likes of TomTom, Navman and Garmin have in spades, but the German manufacturer knows how to give consumers bang for their buck. The 4350max user interface and map display aren't as appealing as those on some competing GPS units, but features like MyRoutes technology, lane assistance, Reality View Pro and Bluetooth hands-free make this GPS device good value for money.

Uniden TRAX 430 GPS unit (RRP: $299)

Uniden is another brand that is well known for providing good value in the GPS device market. The TRAX 430 costs far less than similar devices from rival manufacturers, but it still offers a respectable features list, including safety camera alerts, text-to-speech navigation and 3D landmarks. This GPS unit is definitely worth considering if you're on a budget.

Garmin nuvi 265W GPS unit (RRP: $449)

A mid-range GPS commanding a reasonable price (at press time it was available for $335), Garmin's nuvi 265W is a compact widescreen GPS featuring Bluetooth and text-to-speech technology. It doesn't include many other advanced features, but the combination of excellent navigation and ease of use makes this device an appealing choice.

Navman S300T GPS unit (RRP: $599)

The glide interface isn’t perfect, but Navman's S300T is the company's best GPS yet. An excellent design, a clean map screen and clear voice instructions combined with a heap of extra features make this an excellent top-of-the-range choice.

Windows 10 for Business / Dell XPS 13

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

First impression on unpacking the Q702 test unit was the solid feel and clean, minimalist styling.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
