IBM unveils Linux suite

The suite is packaged with a variety of applications and tools intended to make it easier for users, developers, and integrators to host and create messaging and collaboration solutions, to develop Web sites and manage data.
Carrying a suggested retail price of $US499, the Suite includes DB2 Universal Database Version 7, Websphere Application Server Standard Edition Version 3, and Lotus Domino Version 5.04. Also included is Websphere Homepage Builder, the IBM Suites Installer, Websphere Studio, and Domino Designer.
"We think this suite delivers the three most requested servers including database, e-mail, and Web application server software," said Scott Handy, director of Linux solutions marketing for IBM's Software Division.
Small businesses can license the suite for as many as 100 users per organization. Individual user licenses are sold separately for $US90 and include access to any server component for Linux desktops. Users also can access Lotus Notes and DB2 clients for Windows-based desktops.
Recent research from International Data Corporation shows that about 48 per cent of all Linux server-based installations are small companies. IDC reported that there were 1.3 million new server installations in 1999 by companies with 100 employees or less.
IBM's applications and tools suite is supported on the four leading Linux operating system platforms including Red Hat, Caldera Systems, SuSE Linux AG and TurboLinux.
