Has Sony Won The Console War?

PS3 sales up 1000 percent in UK; ouselling Xbox 360 and Wii by a three-to-one ratio

Sales of Sony's re-designed PlayStation 3 have exploded in the UK, increasing nearly 1000 per cent over the prior week. The figures come from UK and Denmark market-researcher Chart-Track.

Speaking to UK Game Business site MCV, a Chart-Track representative said that the sales increase was "very impressive", adding that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite by "a ratio of three-to-one.” Sony's UK sales director Mark Howsen said that the first week of sales were ahead of expectations. See the full report at MCVUK.com for further details.

This places the Sony PS3 in a commanding position to usurp the Xbox 360 and Wii as Europe's best-selling console. (Prior to the launch of the Slim, the original PlayStation 3 was only a million units behind its competitors in this territory.) The success of the PS3 Slim has been echoed around the globe, with total worldwide sales estimated at 500,000 -- and that's in its first week alone. With its inbuilt Blu-ray player, integrated Wi-Fi and free online gaming, it's hard to argue that the PS3 doesn't offer better value for money than its competitors (provided you actually want all of these things, of course).

Whichever way you look at it, it would seem that the price is finally right for hesitant PS3 buyers. One thing's for sure, the console wars are about to get a lot more interesting...

ps3 is the future and the future is ps3

Get Real

No chance of this amount being sold over a significant timescale

Is this another sonyfanboy site or something?!

Can you please get real and look at whats happening with some vision please.

Last week every region recorded a significant drop in ps3 sales. The 360 was recording a 4 to 1 sales advantage over the ps3 last week in most regions.

Why? Because everyone knew the ps3 slim was coming out the week after. So people that have been waiting for several months for the release of the slim have been holding off from buying one. So people, who have waited, rush out and buy one on release. Which has produced this phoney '1000%' increase in sales.

Can you wake up please. Comparing the sales against the previous week really doesn't show how a long term trend is going to occur. So if you really want to gauge numbers look at the long term trends. From what I'm seeing the ps3 is seeling 3 to 1 against the 360 ... ok great the 360 did the same thing when it got a price drop last year, then things returned to 'normal' after a few weeks.

This is a temporary spike in sales... anyone with half a brain can see that the slim will not continue these numbers for any prolonged period.

Seriously this reporter is braindead if he thinks these numbers will continue for any prolonged period.

Please stop the idiotic sensationalist headlines and try to get some credibility.

360 + Natal = ps3 dead

360 + Natal is the Future

Mid-2010 will see the release of the Xbox360Slim + Natal (500gig HD).

This is the knockout blow to sony... the ps3 will be dead shortly after that. The 360 will see the same amount of units sold as the Wii has for the last few years. GAME OVER for sony.

PS3 Slim

Both Consoles had a price drop so who's to say that the PS3 slim won't keep up these amazing sales of 500000 a week.

I believe that PC World staff has lost their minds recently.

Must be an editorial decision to garner as much attention on the web as possible - hence the sensationalist headlines (usually anti-MS rhetoric) with no basis in fact.

Apparently PC World is not taking the transition from print to web-based media too well.

The PS3 still is the least sold console and you say it has won the war? wtf?

What a horrible article. the Wii and 360 are outselling the PS3 in worldwide sales.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
