Toshiba has released three new television ranges, including the premium ZV600A series, which uses a 200Hz frame rate to display smooth on-screen motion.

The ZV600A, XV600A and RV600A series differ in their motion handling. The entry-level RV600A does not have any frame rate enhancement and operates at 50Hz, while the XV600A series has a 100Hz frame doubling mode. The ZV600A TVs differ from the XV600A models in that they switch the backlight on and off between frames, creating the illusion of smoother motion. This is the same technology used in the LG LH50’s 200Hz mode.

Toshiba’s new televisions all feature an up-scaling technology called Resolution Plus. Originally earmarked for future television sets with 4K resolutions — that’s 4096x2610 pixels, rather than the measly 1920x1080 (1080p/Full HD) of current televisions — Resolution Plus optimises standard-definition video content for viewing on high-definition panels.

An implementation of Dolby Volume is used on the new Toshiba screens to normalise the volume of audio content being played through in-built speakers. With Dolby Volume enabled, a pre-set volume range can be chosen and any audio significantly quieter or louder will be adjusted.

All Toshiba’s new television models, from the $5169 55in 55ZV600A to the $2199 42in 42RV600A, will be available for purchase on or before 17 October.
