Red Eagle announced plans to create a game based on the late Robert Jordan's 15-book long series (still in progress under author Brandon Sanderson) in November of 2008 after acquiring the rights to the series. Not much was said about the project after that point, though Red Eagle did sign a publishing deal with EA for the title.

As the game hadn't come up in any ominous earnings calls, we assumed it was still in production. The deal with Obsidian announced today confirms our assumption -- but leaves us wondering what exactly Red Eagle needed help with.

Here's what Red Eagle had to say about that in the press release sent out today:

"Although Red Eagle Games is both a game producer and publisher, as a new company, we quickly recognized that we could benefit from supplementing small in-house technical and creative teams with a proven third party developer," said Larry Mondragon, Chief Operating Officer of Red Eagle Games. "Our alliance with Obsidian Entertainment is a perfect fit and will greatly improve the quality, cost and time-to-market for the first-generation of our Wheel of Time games."

"The Wheel of Time is one of the greatest and well-received fantasy series of all time," said Chris Avellone, Chief Creative Officer of Obsidian Entertainment. "Games set in Robert Jordan's universe have the chance to deliver on the epic storylines and the complex characters that the series is known for - and this is one of Obsidian's strengths. It's a natural fit."

The Wheel of Time was previously adapated into a video game by GT Interactive in 1999. Despite being a first-person shooter with minimal RPG elements, it was generally well-received. Check out the Wiki page here.

Currently, there's no release date set for the Wheel of Time game. The 14th book in the series, Towers of Midnight, is due out later this year.
