Telstra is the exclusive launch partner for the new BlackBerry Pearl 3G smartphone.

Telstra today launched RIM's latest smartphone, the BlackBerry Pearl 3G, becoming the first carrier in the world to offer the handset.

Intended to appeal to first-time smartphone buyers, the BlackBerry Pearl 3G features similar specifications to RIM's flagship BlackBerry Bold 9700 but offers a much smaller and more compact design.

Part of the design includes a 20-key condensed QWERTY keyboard and RIM's SureType software, which completes words as they are typed to help eliminate errors and save time.

Exclusive to Telstra for three months after its release, the BlackBerry Pearl 3G also includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

"We believe the BlackBerry Pearl 3G will appeal to many customers who want a smartphone that offers both fashion and function," said Adele Beachley, managing director of RIM, Australia and New Zealand. "It allows customers to upgrade their traditional mobile phone to a full-featured 3G BlackBerry smartphone that supports BlackBerry Messenger and many other apps, while providing a design that looks stunning and feels very familiar and comfortable."

The BlackBerry Pearl 3G smartphone is available from tomorrow at selected Fone Zone, JB Hi-Fi and T-Life stores, with other Telstra stores and dealers across Australia selling the handset from June 1.

The BlackBerry Pearl 3G smartphone is available to Telstra customers for $0 upfront on a $59 cap plan over 24 months, but will also be sold on a range of Telstra business, enterprise and government plans.

"Combined with our new and great value BlackBerry cap plan, this smartphone makes it easy and affordable for social people to connect, exchange messages quickly, access info as it happens and share favourite moments," said Telstra's executive director of mobility products, Ross Fielding. "It also makes for the perfect business companion providing secure access to e-mail and other business functions in a compact format."

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.
