Brisbane is investigating bringing broadband to the city's houses using its sewer pipes to carry the fibre optic cable.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman on Saturday said residents could soon have access to next generation broadband at no cost to ratepayers under the proposal.

He says council is in discussions with a UK company that is seeking to put broadband fibre optic into the city using sewer pipes.

"Council's objective is to get next generation broadband into Brisbane," Mr Newman said.

"We want 100 megabits per second fibre-to-the-home and we want it now."

Unlike the federal government's National Broadband Network which had no firm timetable, the sewer pipe alternative could be installed quickly, he said.

What a Load of CRAP.
This argument has been around since the OPTUS CABLE FIASCO.

Now ask your self this:
What happens to the cable when the sewer is blocked and they send the Sani Snake up it to clear the blockage.

What happens to the cable when the pipe is damaged and they line the Pipe with a Fibre Glass Liner which is then cured by passing steam down the liner.
.
What happens to the cable when the pipe is so badly damaged that it is needed to put a "Pipe Burster" down the Pipe to burst and expand the old pipe so it can pull a new PVC or HDPE replacement pipe in behind it.

The NBN cable like all others should be burried as is the case in the rest of the world but there are no cheap and nasty fixes like this.

Do it once and do it properly.
