Samsung Electronics has launched its latest high-end TV, the Series 9 — a $10,000 55in panel which is a mere 7.98mm thick. The new Series 9 also supports 3D viewing and has a full colour touch-screen remote control.

Aimed at the top end of the TV market and competing with fashionable tech heavyweights such as Bang & Olufsen and Loewe, the Samsung Series 9 LED TV is only offered as a 55in model. The panel is 7.98mm thick across the entire television chassis, thanks to the placement of inputs and circuitry in the television's brushed aluminium stand. As well as displaying regular 2D video content the Series 9 supports 3D viewing when used with compatible Samsung active shutter 3D glasses. Another unique feature of the Samsung Series 9 LED TV is its full colour, Wi-Fi enabled touch-screen remote control. With a three-inch screen that comes with its own built-in speakers and headphone jack, the remote control can stream video directly from the television. This means viewers can use the remote control's screen to watch a different television channel — the Series 9 has dual internal HDTV tuners — or access content from the television's Internet connection, such as YouTube. The remote can also function as a universal remote if paired with other home entertainment devices such as Blu-ray players or set top boxes. The remote control can be purchased separately from the television for an RRP of $299.

Rounded out with PVR support, Internet@TV connectivity, DLNA-compatible media streaming and integrated Wi-Fi, the Series 9 is the most feature-packed &8212; and most expensive, with a $10,000 price tag — television available from a major manufacturer.

“By harnessing the best innovations in technology in a stainless steel structure the width of a pencil, we have created a unique, premium home entertainment experience,” said Mark Leathan, Head of Marketing for Samsung Australia. Representatives from Samsung tipped that the set would be sold exclusively in premium retail outlets such as David Jones and Myer, with high-end A/V retailers also able to stock the panel. The 55in Samsung Series 9 will be available in selected stores later this month.

Alongside the launch of the Series 9 LED television, Australian TV and Hollywood actor Simon Baker was also announced as the new face of Samsung Australia — the Australian actor, best known for his work on TV series The Mentalist, will feature in a new Samsung brand campaign.

Who gives a rodents behind if it's "THIN" or not? Why do I care if it's pencil thin, I just don't get it. It's not like I need the thin TV so because my house is running out of room. But you know those 1 inch fat TV's will fill up your shoe box apartment. Such a tragedy, lol. Seriously, there is no reason to make them that thin. In fact it makes it tempting to bend the screen in anger and yell, "I want a bigger, 72 inch TV, like Vizio's for $3500, but they canceled it!!!" Who gives a donkey testicle if it's thin, yet $10,000? If it were thin at no additional increase in cost, then maybe, but for me I don't even care.
