Beyond the games: Apple to add wireless printing in iOS 4.2
- — 02 September, 2010 03:47
Apple CEO Steve Jobs today -- in the midst of a blitz of consumer-oriented announcements such as video rentals in iTunes, a new touch-based iPod music player model, and an online multiuser gaming service -- introduced a new version of its mobile OS and a new version of the iPod Touch.
Of interest to IT and business users are iOS 4.1's fixes for a series of bugs, including those involving Bluetooth and the proximity sensor, in the iPhone. But the bigger news is iOS 4.2, a free upgrade for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch due out in November. It will include the 4.1 bug fixes and entertainment capabilities, as well as the iOS 4.0 capabilities such as multitasking.

But the key addition to iOS 4 is wireless printing via Wi-Fi for the iPad. (It's unclear whether wireless printing will be available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, as Jobs described wireless printing only in the iPad context.)
Jobs also revealed a new version of the iPod Touch, which he said is the most popular iPod now sold and described as both "an iPhone without a contract" and the most popular portable game player on the market. The new iPod Touch uses the same basic design as the previous model -- not the iPhone 4 design as rumored -- but it adds the iPhone 4's high-resolution Retina display, 3-D axis gyroscope, the Apple A4 processor, front- and rear-facing video cameras, and the FaceTime Wi-Fi videoconferencing capability introdued in the iPhone 4. The new iPod Touch will be available next week.
