LG's Optimus 2X is the first Android smartphone in the world to be powered by a dual-core processor

LG has announced the worlds first smartphone with a dual-core processor, the Android-powered Optimus 2X.

UPDATE: LG has confirmed the Optimus 2X Android smartphone will launch in Australia in March or April, and will be priced exclusively through one or two carriers in the $79 to $99 cap price range. It is not yet known what carriers will offer the smartphone.

Powered by a 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, LG claims the Optimus 2X will provide enhanced multimedia, gaming and Web browsing, along with the ability to multitask with "virtually no screen lag". LG says it will also result in better battery life.

In addition to its dual-core processor, the LG Optimus 2X has a 4in capacitive touchscreen display, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p full HD video recording, HDMI-out, DLNA and 8GB of internal memory, putting it in line to compete with other top-line Android smartphones like the HTC Desire HD, the Samsung Galaxy S and the upcoming Google Nexus S.

The LG Optimus 2X will initially be released with Google's Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system, but LG has promised it will be upgradeable to the latest version of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The Gingerbread version of the Android platform offers numerous improvements over its predecessors, including a refreshed user interface, an improved keyboard layout, better text selection and gyroscopic support for 3D gaming.

The LG Optimus 2X will be launched in Korea in January, with countries in Europe and Asia, including Australia, to follow.

The LG Optimus 2X follows on from the original LG Optimus Android smartphone, and the more recent LG Optimus One; both of which are entry-level Android smartphones.
