The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) today issued a warning about scammers trying to take advantage of Australians' generosity in the wake of the devastating Queensland floods.

ACMA says it has received reports of fraudulent requests for donations via e-mail and SMS, and over the phone. In one case, spammers used text from a government Web site to make the request for donations look genuine.

The agency has warned people to look for messages coming from unknown or unusual phone numbers and e-mail addresses, misspelled messages or messages with poor grammar, and requests to donate using money transfers.
