Toshiba launches new netbooks: NB500, NB550D

New Toshiba NB500 and NB550D netbooks put a focus on multimedia

Toshiba has announced two new netbooks: the Toshiba NB500 and the Toshiba NB550D. Both netbooks weigh 1.35kg, feature a 10.1in screen and a 6-cell battery, and will be available in various colours — orange, blue, copper brown, lime green, and black (for the NB550D only). The new notebooks replace the popular NB300 netbook computer, which was one of our favourite mini-laptops of 2010.

The Toshiba NB500 will be available with a single-core Intel Atom N455 CPU, while the Toshiba NB550D will run on the AMD Fusion platform, which includes an AMD C50 processor and AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics. Toshiba's product marketing manager, Justin White, said that "the NB550D and NB500 netbooks fuse capable computing with advanced multimedia functionality". The new NB550D model will introduce HDMI to Toshiba's netbook offerings, allowing users to easily hook up the little laptop to their TV to watch video content. The netbook will also feature 'premium' Harmon/Kardon speakers, a step up from the stock speakers of the previous generation NB300 netbook.

Both the NB500 and NB550D netbooks will have integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0, as well as 1GB of DDR3 SDRAM and a 250GB hard drive. The NB500 will have a price of $399 while the NB550D will cost $499.

And the Intel version will come with a free bag of monopolistic bribes and threats - Intel's specialty.

AMD's product won't sell. Intel has a bad habit of bribing and threatening OEMs to drop AMD-based products.

Yes, Intel is THAT bad. SUPER BAD!

I hope this time Intel will respect competition and play it fair.

The Fusion APU in my opinion is a revolutionary and innovative product from a small player in the market.
