The Google Nexus S Android phone, manufactured by Samsung, is just the second Google-branded smartphone to hit the market in Australia. It succeeds the HTC-manufactured Google Nexus One, which was also sold exclusively through Vodafone.
The Google Nexus S is the first mobile to natively run the 2.3 version of the Android platform. Its new features include a revamped keyboard, better copy and paste, improved power management, and a slicker user interface. The Nexus S also has a 4in Super AMOLED touchscreen display — the same used in the Samsung Galaxy S — and comes with what is called a Near Field Communications (NFC) chip. NFC is a short-range wireless communication technology; it is used in many new credit cards, letting you swipe your card across a smartchip to make a purchase.
"As the first operator to launch the highly anticipated Nexus S, we can offer customers the fastest version of Android yet. Using Gingerbread (Android 2.3) Vodafone customers will be able to get the most from their Google mobile apps and enjoy them on a 4 inch contour display," said John Casey, director of marketing at Vodafone Hutchison Australia in a statement. "Combined with Vodafone’s great value plans, Nexus S is sure to make its mark on the Australian smartphone market and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this device to our customers."
The Google Nexus S Android phone is available in black or white on a number of Vodafone plans across 12 and 24 month contracts. It is free on Vodafone's $79 cap over 24 months, and on Vodafone's $85 'Infinity' plan over 24 months (offering unlimited calls, unlimited text and unlimited access to social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace and Foursquare).
The Google Nexus S is available from today for current Vodafone customers, and from 16 March for customers who are new to Vodafone. For more information on pricing visit the Vodafone Web site.
