White iPhone on the way – no, really

New reports have surfaced that Apple will start shipping the white iPhone 4 within a few weeks, finally bringing the seemingly endless wait to an end. Not that anyone is quite going to believe this until the precious smartphones are in their hands.

Apple has threatened several times over the past year to make the white iPhone 4 generally available but has then announced delays. Apple said in early July -- after rolling out the iPhone 4 last June -- that a white version would be out later that month, but later that month said it would be available later in 2010, only to delay delivery once more. (The fact that the iPad 2 has shipped from the start in white is probably a good sign that Apple has gotten its color scheme straightened out.)

A Bloomberg report citing three people in the know has sparked the latest round of anticipation for the pale iPhone whose fabled existence up until now inspired comparisons between it and Moby Dick (See “iMoby: The hunt for the great white iPhone” ).

An Apple senior VP confirmed last month that a white iPhone would be arriving this spring.

AT&T and Verizon are both expected to offer the white smartphone, whose production has reportedly been delayed by manufacturing issues involving the paint.

The arrival of the white iPhone is expected to help Apple keep up momentum in the smartphone market given that the iPhone 5 is now expected in the fall, not at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference slated for June. Apple in recent years has used WWDC to introduce iPhone models, but has said this year’s event will be mainly focused on iOS and other software.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
