Research In Motion, manufacturer of the popular BlackBerry smartphone, has launched a BlackBerry Protect app that allows individual BlackBerry users to wirelessly backup, restore and locate their smartphone.

Read our guide to the top BlackBerry smartphones on the market, including the flagship BlackBerry Torch 9800.

A free app available for download from the BlackBerry App World store, BlackBerry Protect is a security solution that provides remote wipe and lock functions, the ability to locate a Blackberry on a map, and the ability to wirelessly backup and restore a BlackBerry smartphone if it is misplaced, lost or stolen.

BlackBerry Protect also allows users to activate of a 'lost and found' home screen, hoping that whoever stole or found your phone might have the decency to contact you. The app can also force your BlackBerry to ring at full volume.

Once installed, BlackBerry Protect can be set to automatically backup common phone data including text messages, contacts, calendar, and bookmark information. The backups can be set automatically on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

BlackBerry Protect is now available as a beta download from BlackBerry App World. The app works on selected BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher, which includes the BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Bold 9780 and the flagship BlackBerry Torch 9800 devices.
