BlackBerry 6 OS now available, but only for Vodafone users

Research In Motion (RIM) today announced that its latest BlackBerry 6 operating system is now available is a free software update for Vodafone users, but Telstra and Optus BlackBerry users will have to wait.

The software update is available for Vodafone customers with a BlackBerry Bold 9700, a BlackBerry Curve 3G or a BlackBerry Pearl 3G device. The new OS provides a host of new features including a new user interface and home screen, an improved Web browser, a universal search tool, and improved multimedia performance. The BlackBerry 6 OS also has a social feeds application that manages multiple social networking accounts including BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Windows Live Messenger.
"We believe that BlackBerry smartphone users will love the fantastic communication, browsing and multimedia enhancements that BlackBerry 6 offers," said Adele Beachley, managing director for RIM Australia and New Zealand. "The new operating system includes great features such as the universal search tool and expanded messaging capabilities that enrich a user's overall experience, so we are excited to offer the update to BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Curve 3G and BlackBerry Pearl 3G users."
When pressed on when the BlackBerry 6 OS will be available for Telstra and Optus customers, a RIM spokesperson said, "at this stage we don't have any information about availability from other carriers."
Vodafone users can get the update for their compatible BlackBerry handset by connecting the phone to a computer through a USB connection, then visiting www.blackberry.com/update from their computer, and clicking "check for updates".
