Samsung, Motorola tablets get Skype video

Skype also adds in-app advertising to its Android client

Skype has released version 2.5 of its application for Android, which allows Android-based tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom to use its video calling feature, it said in a blog post on Wednesday.

The two tablets are among 14 Android-based devices that now can make video calls; other additions include Motorola Droid 3, LG Optimus Black and Acer Iconia. This brings the total number of video-compatible devices to 41, according to Skype.

Skype version 2.5 for Android also allows users to switch between portrait and landscape mode during calls, and zoom in with a double tap on the screen, Skype said.

The company has also improved support for Bluetooth headsets and included a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements.

Last but not least, the software will from now on include ads for some users. To keep it ad free, users need Skype Credit, a Calling or Skype Premium subscription, according to Skype. The in-app advertising will not be enabled on some smaller screen sizes, it said without elaborating.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
