As the year draws to a close, we reveal the top five smartphones of 2011

3rd place: Apple iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S

Why: Apple's iPhone 4S may not have been the iPhone 5 everyone was expecting, but it remains an excellent smartphone regardless. Yes, it has a physical design that's identical to the previous iPhone 4. However, it boasts a number of improvements that make it a worthy upgrade provided you're coming from an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS — an outstanding camera, a faster processor, better graphics and more memory. There is no doubting Apple has it right with the iPhone platform: it combines an excellent phone with a strong apps ecosystem.
