Telstra has announced its data plans for the new iPad and has also confirmed it will open its flagship Sydney and Melbourne stores at 12.01 on Friday morning to launch the new device.
The telco confirmed this morning that it will open its major stores in George Street, Sydney and Bourke Street, Melbourne at 12.01am on Friday morning. Telstra will sell the new iPad on a range of 24 month data plans starting at $48 per month for the 16GB model, but will not offer the tablet on 12 month plans or sell the iPad outright.
"Hundreds of thousands of Australians already love the speed, coverage and reliability available when using iPad on the Telstra Mobile Network," said Anthea Roberts, director, Telstra Mobile Broadband. "Telstra's super-fast 3G network is a great way for users to take full advantage of the amazing new iPad." There are four plans for each iPad model offering 1GB, 4GB 8GB or 15GB per month.
Telstra's cheapest plan on the 16GB iPad will set you back $48 per month for 1GB of data, which totals $1152 over 24 months. There are no upfront costs on any of the new plans: the same plan on paired with the 32GB iPad will cost $52 per month and $57 per month with the largest 64GB model.
Although the new iPad is not compatible with Telstra's 4G network, the telco does have an advantage over rival networks Optus and Vodafone: the new iPad is a dual-channel HSPA+ device, which means it will support theoretical maximum speeds of up to 42Mbps. Telstra quotes typical download speeds of 1.1 megabits per second (Mbps) – 20Mbps in all Australian capital CBDs, airports, selected metropolitan areas and regional areas that cover more than 60 per cent of Australia's population.
