Google Nexus 7 gets firmware update

Nexus 7 update arrives while UK release date is disorganised

Google's Nexus 7 tablet has got its first software update taking the device to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean.

Our review sample of the Nexus 7 notified us of the upgrade today which totals a mere 859kb. The over the air (OTA) update mainly improves performance and responsiveness system wide, according to the notification. See also: Google Nexus 7 tablet vs Apple iPad comparison review.

The budget tablet, made by Asus, is selling well in the US since it went on sale last Friday. PC Advisor's colleagues at PC World are saying the Nexus 7 is hard to find with some retailers running out of stock.

In the UK the release date, according to Asus, is 20 July online and 27 July in-store. However, Currys says the device is expected today, three days earlier than the 19 July which was originally stated.

Ebuyer also had 19 July but after checking today the date has changed to 3 August. HMV still has 19 July as its release date.

The Google Play Store is the only place to purchase the 8GB model for £159. The store touts shipping in 1-2 weeks.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
