Apple has announced an event on October 23 where it is expected to reveal the hotly-anticipated iPad mini. What can we expect?

Where?

The company sent invitations to the media overnight for an event at the California Theatre in San Jose. This is the first time in seven years that Apple has used this venue for a product launch.

What?

Like always, Apple has been light on details. The invitation sent to the media is simply titled "We've got a little more to show you". Most observers suggest the word "little" points to an event that will unveil the much-rumoured iPad mini.

When?

The Apple event is scheduled for Tuesday October 23 and will kick off at 10am Pacific Standard Time (PST). For us Aussies, that translates to a starting time of 4am on Wednesday October 24.

iPad mini rumours

Despite being a completely new product, the iPad mini rumour mill has gone into overdrive in the past few months. Some of the widely expected features are:

A smaller 7.65in screen compared to the larger 9.7in display on the regular iPad.
A display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1136 x 640.
The smaller 8-pin 'Lightning' connector, the same port used on the recently released iPhone 5.
512MB of RAM.
The same A5 processor used in the iPad 2.
A starting price of somewhere between $US250 to $US350.
Both Wi-Fi and 3G versions, but no LTE 4G connectivity expected.

When is the iPad mini likely to be available in Australia?

You can expect the iPad mini to be available in Australia as soon as its available in the US. Using this year's new iPad as a guide, Apple announced the iPad on Thursday 8 March and released the tablet in Australian stores on Friday 16 March. Apple traditionally likes Friday for product launches, so Friday 2 November or Friday 9 November are good bets.

Where will I be able to buy the iPad mini from?

If it comes with 3G capabilties, the iPad mini is likely to be available from all three major telcos in Australia — Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

Like the current iPad, the iPad mini will also be sold outright through Apple Retail Stores and online store.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
