Telstra has announced the release of its own branded, 4G-capable Android tablet, simply called the Telstra 4G Tablet. The telco claims it is the most affordable 4G Android tablet available on the Australian market.

Manufactured by Chinese OEM ZTE, the Telstra 4G Tablet has a 10.1in screen with a resolution of 1280x800 and runs Google's Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' operating system.

The 4G Tablet device is the second Android tablet Telstra has released in Australia, following the launch of the widely panned T-Touch Tab back in 2010.

"Given Australians' appetite for technology we know that mobile tablets will be on many shopping lists this holiday season," said Telstra Mobile's director Anthea Roberts. "We think the Telstra 4G Tablet will be a popular option, taking the latest touch-screen technology and making it accessible to everyday Australian families."

"Its versatility is a big drawcard, providing entertainment that keeps the kids amused to reading e-books, checking email or catching up on Facebook."

The Telstra 4G tablet is powered by a 1.5GHz dual core processor, has 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded with an optional microSD card slot and has a 6900mAh battery that Telstra says will provide up to nine hours of video playback.

The 4G tablet also comes with dual cameras, including a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera for video calls. The tablet weighs 670g, which compares relatively favourably with Apple's new fourth generation iPad (662g).

The Telstra 4G Tablet will be available online and in stores tomorrow for $480 outright. The tablet will also be sold on a Telstra Data+ Tablet Plan for $49 per month over 24 months. The plan includes 4GB of data per month.
