Telstra 4G Tablet (preview)

Telstra's first tablet was widely panned as a dud, but the telco obviously sees a place in this ever expanding market for a device of its own. The creatively-titled Telstra 4G Tablet is exactly that, a 4G Android tablet that claims to be Australia's cheapest 4G tablet.
The Telstra 4G Tablet has a bland name and by the looks of things, a bland specifications list, too. It's an Android tablet, so it will do everything an Android tablet can including browse the Web and access third-party apps from the Google Play Store. However, there's little remarkable or ground breaking here, aside from the fact that it connects to Telstra's excellent 4G network in Australia.
The Telstra 4G Tablet is manufactured by Chinese OEM ZTE. It has a 10.1in screen with the now standard resolution of 1280x800. It runs Google's Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' operating system, too. We wouldn't expect Telstra to upgrade the 4G Tablet to the latest 4.1 Jelly Bean version any time soon, but Ice Cream Sandwich isn't too outdated and provides similar core functionality.
The Telstra 4G tablet is powered by an unspecified 1.5GHz dual core processor, has 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded with a microSD card and has a 6900mAh battery. Telstra says the 4G Tablet will provide up to nine hours of video playback. If real world use confirms this figure then it's an impressive result, especially given this is a 4G device.
The Telstra 4G tablet is powered by a 1.5GHz dual core processor.
The Telstra 4G tablet has dual cameras on board. There's a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera for video calls. The tablet weighs 670g, which compares relatively favourably with Apple's new fourth generation iPad (662g).
Retailing for $480, Telstra says the 4G Tablet is Australia's cheapest LTE-capable Android tablet. While that certainly may be the case, a tad under $500 isn't exactly pocket change. Yes, the Telstra 4G Tablet is competitively priced against Android tablets with 3G or 4G connectivity, but this certainly isn't a budget device. We can only hope it performs as well as other $500 Android tablets on the market.
The Telstra 4G Tablet sells for $480 outright. The tablet is also sold on a Telstra Data+ Tablet Plan for $49 per month over 24 months. The plan includes 4GB of data per month.
