Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has claimed the top sales position for 2012 with the PlayStation 3.
Based on figures from the NPD Group Australia featured in the 2012 market overview by the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (iGEA), the PlayStation 3 attained the top spot for hardware unit sales with a 27 per cent share.
SCEA managing director, Michael Ephraim, said sales in 2012 were propped up by the release of a new “super slim” model.
“PlayStation 3 continues to power in Australia,” he said.
“Our sales leadership strength continues despite factors such as economic downturn, aggressive industry pricing and new competitor consoles being launched.”
In addition to securing the top hardware spot, PlayStation 3 games software also achieved the number 1 unit sales position for the year with a 28.9 per cent share.
SCEA hopes to maintain this momentum into 2013 with a software line-up that consists of God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us, and Beyond: Two Souls for core gamers, as well as new titles for Wonderbook for casual audiences.
“We are also seeing accelerated growth in our online sales driven by an increased range of digital content and subscription products such as the PlayStation Plus program in Australia,” Ephraim said.
