Microsoft has shared the tiniest bit of useful information with keen fans of its Surface line-up - beginning “late March”, the Surface Pro will come to an expanded number of markets around the world.
No specific date or even specific month was shared in Microsoft’s communique, with the software giant sharing this tidbit: ”Microsoft will continue its phased roll-out of Surface, bringing Surface Pro to Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United Kingdom in the coming months.”
This does confirm the Surface Pro’s Australian release, though, which can only be a good thing. Microsoft is understandably upbeat — whether through strong demand or limited supply, the 128GB Surface Pro has been consistently sold out on its US online store since the tablet launched earlier this month. Stock of the lower capacity 64GB model has been steady, though, and retail partners Best Buy and Staples seem to be confident of a steady flow of 128GB models as well.
Being one of the largest technology markets in that list, alongside the UK, we expect that the Surface Pro will launch in Australia closer to “late March” than later in the “coming months”. Stock will likely be limited, and the 128GB model will almost certainly be the favoured choice of savvy Australian buyers. The device’s launch could also line up with a possible launch of a new range of accessories currently being developed by Surface Pro engineers.
Similarly, with the case study of the Surface RT to look back on, it's possible that Microsoft will keep local pricing for the Surface Pro not too far off its US benchmark. With a US$899 and US$999 price for the 64GB and 128GB models respectively, prices should be around the AU$999 to AU$1299 range. This would line up with the current pricing offered by import retailers MobiCity and Expansys.
