BIG W recalls neck-snapping “crush hazard” TV

Vivo 50-inch plasma TV “may break unexpectedly”

The ACCC and BIG W have issued a national recall for a 50-inch plasma TV made by Vivo. The Vivo PTV50HD plasma’s stand “may break unexpectedly”, dropping the TV panel forwards.

Any BIG W customer that has bought a Vivo PTV50HD has been urged to cease using the stand immediately, and to return the television for a full refund.

Serial numbers suggest that around 2000 of the Vivo TVs are affected by the defect, which could see the neck of the TV’s stand snap without warning. If this happens, the TV will dislodge from the stand and could potentially fall forwards. The PTV50HD is a 50-inch plasma TV which weighs nearly 50KG, and would pose a significant danger to anyone it fell upon.

The Vivo PTV50HD is a budget big-screen plasma — it sold for $498 at BIG W, but is now listed as unavailable on the company’s website. It is also available at online electronics retailer ShoppingSquare, and can still be purchased, although it is unclear whether these TVs are susceptible to the defect responsible for the recall.

Customers can return their TVs to BIG W for a full refund, or can contact Vivo to have a replacement stand posted to them for no cost. More information on the recall can be found on the ACCC Recalls website.
