While most of the UK - and much of the world - waits impatiently for 4G broadband engineers at Samsung are already working on even faster 5G broadband.
According to Korea's Yonhap News Agency, Samsung has successfully developed its 5G network with 1Gbps speed (potentially up to 10Gbps), and aims to provide the super-fast data service by 2020.
The first 2G system arrived in 1992, 3G in 2001, and 4G in 2012. Samsung's 2020 target for 5G therefore looks realistic.
The new wireless 'mmWave Mobile Technology' will enable customers to access a stream of data faster than the current fourth-generation network and download an entire movie in less than a second, said Samsung.
In a company blog Samsung claims has to have successfully developed the world's first adaptive array transceiver technology operating in the millimetre-wave Ka bands for cellular communications.
The new technology will provide data transmission "up to several hundred times faster than current 4G networks", claims Samsung.
"5G will be capable of providing a ubiquitous gigabit experience to subscribers anywhere and offers data transmission speeds of up to several tens of Gbps per base station", boasts the company blog.
There is currently no official 5G telecommunication standardization body or protocols.
Samsung's new adaptive array transceiver technology transmits data in the millimetre-wave band at a frequency of 28GHz at a speed of up to 1.056Gbps to a distance of up to 2 kilometres.
Samsung claims that the adaptive array transceiver technology, using 64 antenna elements, "can be a viable solution for overcoming the radio propagation loss at millimetre-wave bands, much higher than the conventional frequency bands ranging from several hundred MHz to several GHz".
