WD adds Intel Xeon processing to its Windows-based Sentinel servers

WD today announced a new line of Sentinel Windows-based servers that make use of Intel’s Xeon CPUs. The news models are the WD Sentinel DS5100 and DS6100 (which are called the S Series), and they are an improvement over the company’s previous Sentinel DX Series offering, which was based on Intel’s Atom CPU.
The new servers are aimed at small business users who want to add a manageable storage server to their office, and it comes filled with four enterprise-class WD hard drives that can offer up to 16TB of storage space. Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials is preloaded on the server, which, among other things, allows the server to be used as a storage point for multiple users, for scheduled backups, and for remote data access. WD ships the unit with automatic backup-and-restore software for up to 25 users and 50 computers.
In a press release from WD, Microsoft’s Director of Marketing, OEM Division, Jamie Hamilton, said that the Sentinel hardware along with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials gives small business, first-server buyers “the benefit of built-in, ground-breaking, low-cost storage solutions”. Microsoft MVP, Kevin Royalty, added that the Sentinel is a “turn-key solution” that’s an ideal package for buyers who are after their first server.
Apart from the four 3.5in enterprise-class hard drives and Xeon processor, the hardware configuration for the new Sentinel offerings also includes a 2.5in boot drive, dual Gigabit and dual DC-in power ports for redundancy, and physical security is present in the form of a bezel lock. The footprint of the server is said to also be appealing for first-time buyers as it won’t occupy a large chunk of space. Additionally, it’s a server that won’t require a high-degree of knowledge to set up and use.
The WD Sentinel DS5100 will be available in two models: the 4TB WDBYVE0040KBK (AU$3799 and NZ$4499), and the 8TB WDBYVE0080KBK (AU$4499 and NZ$5399).
The WD Sentinel DS6100 will be available in three models: the 8TB WDBWVL008KBK (AU$4999 and NZ$5999), the 12TB WDBWVL0120KBK (AU$5799 and NZ$6899), and the 16TB WDBWVL0160KBK (AU$6499 and NZ$7799).
They are distributed by Synnex.
