Apple has launched its free iTunes Radio service in Australia as it hopes to prevent customers from migrating to rival streaming services.
The internet radio service features over 100 stations and generates songs based on your iTunes music history. “The more you use iTunes Radio and iTunes, the more it knows what you like to listen to and the more personalised your experience becomes,” it said in Apple's statement.
iTunes Radio is compatible with a variety of Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple TV, and both Mac and Windows computers.
Exclusive tracks will be made available on iTunes Radio, Apple claims. The ability to leverage iTunes will help Apple compete in the radio space against existing services from Google, JB Hi-Fi, Rdio and Spotify.
iTunes Radio is “free for everyone” on compatible devices as it is subsidised by advertisements. Those looking for an uninterrupted music experience can upgrade to the premium iTunes Match. In addition to no ads, it delivers a more personalised listening experience by factoring in the songs you have stored in iCloud, including those ripped from CDs.
A one-year subscription to iTunes Match is $35. Compared to the premium All Access subscription offered by Google’s Play, which costs $12 a month, it is priced competitively. However, it is worth noting that the two services differ in inclusions and premium benefits.
